Introducing the Youth Justice Committee
As of April 1, 2003, legistlation has replaced the Young Offenders Act (YOA) with the new Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA). This new act allows communities to become more involved in the restoration of justice and their youth. The Land of Nipigon Chamber of Commerce is the sponsoring agency for this program.
The Attorney General's Office has selected our communities of Nipigon, Dorion-Hurkett, Red Rock, Lake Helen, MacDiarmid/Rocky Bay, Pays Plat, Schreiber/Terrace Bay as the destination for a community Youth Justice Committee. The Youth Justice Committee office is located on Third St in Nipigon and represents the communities as stated above.
This program makes the youth accountable to the community (and their victims) when they become in conflict with the law. Considering the term, "It takes a whole community to raise a child", it appears that our federal government has returned to the 'old fashioned' ways of deterring our youth, by allowing members of the coummunity to become involved in the process of restoring justice.
I am Kris Brown and your Youth Justice Committee has hired me as the Coordinator of this program. I had previously worked for ten years for the Thunder Bay Police, most of my time spent as a Court Liaison Officer working closely with the Crown's office in Thunder Bay.
Our communities have the opportunity to make the youth accountable for their actions through meaningful consequences. However, it takes volunteers and representatives from each community. Our Justice Committee is seeking representation from each community and volunteers are needed in order to make this program successful. I am available for presentations, discussions and information regarding this program. If you are interested in becoming involved in this program in any capacity, please contact me at 887-5858.
